Sheyenne Mitchell-Brown is an English Education major at Oklahoma State University. She dedicates this poem to all the teachers and students who are afraid they will die for their education.
i held my friend the other day
they were
crying.
they saw the news.
so far
seven
people
dead.
old news.
who hasn’t been a victim of a school shooting is the better question now.
too many victims.
numbers getting higher every week.
i frown at my lack of surprise.
i leave that thought for another day.
i’ll morally chastise myself later.
not now.
my friend is
crying.
they’re crying over a word in the headline they read:
Transgender.
‘i read that word and
all
i could think was
what they were going to say.
‘i can hear it now.
my mom
tucker carlson
i can hear them all.
all the reasons why my friend is
broken
dangerous
needs to be “eradicated.”
i see their fears come to life.
i’m not surprised at all.
